Every Country in Africa—Southern Africa—Episode 4

In our final episode of "Every Country in Africa", we focused on Southern Africa, covering its history from colonialism to the arrival of European settlers and the complexities of overlapping ethnicities. We examined how Cecil Rhodes deceived Southern African chiefs to seize their lands, then renamed the region Rhodesia in his honour. We explored the various ethnic groups in South Africa and traced their origins back to what is now the country.

We also discussed Malawi, Namibia, and Mozambique, which was one of Africa's earliest countries colonised by Europeans. We also looked at Madagascar, which shares more similarities with Asia than with Africa.

There's a Zimbabwean politician rising in the ranks, who I spoke to, and when we discussed Mugabe's land grab, I told him-''If Mugabe had been smart, he would have put a 10% foreigner tax on the farms owned by the whites. They keep the land, the government makes money, and uses that money to expand development, and give small business loans to the locals-win-win for everyone.'' He looked at me like I was a space alien. Shame what happened to Zim, it was an incredible country in the 90s

Bantu, they made a series about Rhodes in 1998 for BBC, it's not bad, 6 episodes, one of the most expensive productions at the time. It's available on YouTube

South Africa is a giant of Africa thanks to the Europeans or rather Afrikaaners who developed that country's economy.

I honestly wish you were South African and Bantu. I think you would have made such a great contribution here. We’re going through a really difficult time as a country right now, but I truly believe we’ll bounce back. South Africa has so much potential, and I believe we’ll get back on our feet and compete with the G7 countries again one day because being the giant of Africa is not enough

the X in Xhosa, is not pronounced Shosa, but with the click osa. the sound of X is pronounced by putting the tongue to the side of the cheek and pulling it down like a tearing sound. For those Americans, its the sound we make to make a horse, ''giddy up.'' X(!)osa
