EWT Bazaruto Dugong Protection Project

Descrição

The Bazaruto Archipelago National Park (BANP) covers an area of 1,430 km2, including the five islands of Bangue, Santa Carolina, Bazaruto, Benguerra and Magaruque. The islands support approximately 5,500 local people who live in seven communities. The primary livelihood of the communities residing within the park is artisanal fishing.

In the light of climate change and an ever-increasing fishing pressure within and around the park, it is more and more important to have a system in place, which allows management to monitor changes. Any changes in the relative abundance and diversity of fish communities may indicate threats or pressures on the ecosystems surrounding Bazaruto Archipelago. The EWT is working to ensure that coastal communities are able to sustain their fisheries, while protected the dugong and seagrass habitat.
