Devastating Hurricane Otis dying out over Mexico - October 26, 2023
Descrição
Hurricane Otis made a catastrophic Category 5 landfall late last night near Acapulco, Mexico, and has caused significant damage in the region. The storm rapidly weakened and has dissipated well inland over central Mexico.
Hurricane Tammy is now the strongest storm at the moment, at Category 2 intensity 800 kilometers east of Bermuda. The storm is expected to turn post-tropical over the next 24 hours and hook around towards the west, giving storm force winds to Bermuda on Friday and Saturday.
Cyclone Lola also found its demise north of New Caledonia, bereft of all convection and reduced to a naked swirl. The remnants of Lola will still produce strong winds and get absorbed into a large extratropical storm which will primarily affect the North Island of New Zealand.
An area of interest is expected to follow in the footsteps of Otis this weekend into next week, and could stall off the coast of Guatemala and Oaxaca, and could become another major problem in the region.
An area of interest in the Western Pacific is still doubtful to form, but is held at 10% on our update.

Otis really outproformed the NHC this time. Hopefully they are doing well in Mexico.

Seeing the devastation in Acapulco is heartbreaking. I'm seriously considering getting a passport just to help with relief efforts when the rebuilding and clearing starts.

I’m seeing a concerning resemblance to hurricane eta in the Atlantic seeing it in 2020 I would not be surprised if it happened again in this oddly active season.

Otis will go down as one of the most notorious failures in weather forecasting in history. It's certainly the greatest failure I have ever seen. We have to investigate why all the signals and all the models and all the guidance that said this would only be a moderate TS/weak cat 1 at most got this storm so horribly horribly wrong and led us blind to the realities of the rapidly intensifying Category 5 Monster that we saw. There are some very hard lessons here that we have to learn. From the limited pictures and videos I have seen, the damage in Acapulco looks reminiscent to what Hurricane Andrew produced south of Miami in 1992. Some of you may remember that Andrew too was a nightime nightmare.
