Tropical Cyclone Idai, A category 3 cyclone has made landfall in Mozambique on Thursday evening, bringing with it high wind speeds of up to 224km/h and rain.There are reports of damage and power cuts as the tropical cyclone made landfall. The cyclone which has already claimed ten more lives in Mozambique - comes with the warning of dangerously high seas, extreme flooding, strong, damaging winds, storm surges and significant rainfall.It is reported that Idai is expected to weaken into an overland depression on Friday but is still expected to result in significant and torrential rainfall and widespread flooding over the Sofala and Manica provinces of Mozambique. The torrential rainfall will also be in the eastern parts of Zimbabwe and the southern parts of Malawi which have been already hit by severe flooding over the past week. Life-threatening coastal and inland flooding is at risk from Inhassoro to Quelimane where 200 - 300mm of rain is expected close to the city of Beira. Another major threat from Idai is storm surge, which is an onshore surge of seawater caused by the storm.Storm surges are the leading cause of deaths associated with tropical cyclones worldwide. According to the Mozambique National Meteorology Institute (INAM) Intense Tropical Cyclone (IDAI), category 4, has entered the mainland of the province of Sofala, by the district of Dondo, with the center located at the coordinates 19.8 degrees South of latitude and 35.6 degrees East of longitude and with pressure of 955 hectopascals, winds of 165 km / h and bursts up to 200 km / h. With very strong winds 160 to 190 kilometers per hour), accompanied by very strong rains (more than 150 millimeters in 24 hours) and severe thunderstorms. After Landfall : After landfall, Cyclone Idai is expected to track inland, bringing heavy rain to central Mozambique and potentially into eastern Zimbabwe.
