Cyclone Judy reaching Vanuatu - February 28, 2023

Cyclone Judy is the main area of concern today, and is about to churn through most of the islands of Vanuatu as a strong tropical storm. Judy is expected to intensify throughout its passage, and could reach Category 2 hurricane equivalent status by the time it leaves. Meanwhile, another smaller system over the Coral Sea is expected to also form and fall in behind Judy and impact Vanuatu only a day or two after Judy, leading to a double impact and very high potential rainfall. Some of the islands may reach in excess of 400mm of rainfall in the next seven days, with fairly high amounts in Fiji and New Caledonia. The threat to New Zealand from both systems is low. Elsewhere, Cyclone Enala continues to hold on in the subtropical zone southeast of Mauritius, and will eventually give up later this week. Cyclone Freddy's remnants are about to emerge over the Mozambique Channel, and there is a small chance of regeneration back to tropical storm status. Most of the rainfall from the storm has been expended, although some areas of southern Mozambique may still see another 250mm of rainfall.
