Cyclone Idai has nearly doubled in its intensity in the last 12 hours, and rapid intensification is still ongoing. With sea surface temperatures well above the threshold required for storm development, and wind shear values near nil, only the storm itself could limit its own strengthening if it remains slow moving.
Current models still indicate a landfall in Mozambique late this week, with more heavy rain over areas that have already sustained losses from the storm's precursor.
