Cyclone Gezani on collision course with Madagascar

After several days of struggling near the Mascarene Islands, Cyclone Gezani started a rapid intensification phase yesterday and is now a major Category 3 cyclone about to make landfall near Toamasina, Madagascar. Major wind and rain impacts are expected in the area, with over 800,000 in the firing line for possible hurricane force winds. The storm is expected to make landfall shortly as a strong Category 3 hurricane equivalent, and rapidly weaken inland. However, storm force winds cannot be ruled out for the inland capital, Antananarivo.

Gezani is likely to strengthen again over the Mozambique Channel later this week, and could cause hurricane impacts to the coast of Mozambique as well before curving back towards the east or southeast.
