Cyclone Freddy starting to affect Mozambique coast - March 10, 2023

Cyclone Freddy has been maintaining intensity over the last day or so, and is still a Category 1 storm on the Saffir Simpson Hurricane Scale. The storm may intensify some more before reaching the coast on Saturday, and Freddy is likely to slow down and possibly stall along the coast. Along with strong winds, rainfall is expected to be extremely high near the landfall zone, with 30 inches (750mm) likely and widespread areas of 10 inches (250mm) possible. Significant amounts of rain from the storm are likely to fall as far away as Zambia, Malawi, and the Mozambique border with Tanzania, as well as locally high amounts in parts of Madagascar, and south of Beira. Freddy is still expected to perform a U-turn along the coast and turn back towards the south or southeast next week, but confidence remains very low and track uncertainty very high, and the forecast beyond the next couple of days may not be accurate. Elsewhere, a couple of systems are showing signs of life in the South Pacific, with potential threats for Vanuatu and the Cook Islands over the weekend into next week.
