Cyclone Freddy stalls on the coast of Mozambique – March 11, 2023
Cyclone Freddy is delivering potentially catastrophic amounts of rainfall over the Quelimane region of Mozambique as the storm stalls just 30 kilometers offshore with winds of 175 kilometers per hour. The storm is expected to gradually weaken as it continues to stall for the next day or so, and is then likely to turn back out over the Mozambique Channel yet again.
Up to 28 inches (700mm) of further rainfall is expected near the landfall zone, which was already inundated by Freddy’s first passage over a week ago. Widespread flooding is expected over the entire region of northern Mozambique, and into southern Malawi where over 8 inches (200mm) are possible.
Freddy is setting records for cyclone longevity and accumulated cyclone energy, 33 days since it first got named in the Australian region. The track forecast remains uncertain, and the storm may move inland. However, the bulk of model projections are now suggesting the storm to move out over the Mozambique channel and may persist for another ten days as it drifts southwards. Further impacts in Madagascar, southern Mozambique and South Africa cannot be ruled out.

obviously, when it was a low pressure system (not yet officially a tropical depression) its not counted

Remenber when the storm just formed, we thought it's dead meat and definitely not record-breaking? Good old times…..
What time did it make landfall? I'm surprised it still has it's eye.

Freddy has broken the record for highest ACE previously held by Ioke in 2006. It is just a few hours away from breaking Johns record for the most days as a classified tropical cyclone at 32.

I remember tracking Freddy since he was in a depression off the Australian coast, is it incredible that he's still alive and my beard even grew, Freddy you show that hurricanes can last as long as they want as long as conditions allow, it will be very hard to beat his freddy for northern hurricanes and typhoons

Freddy is the longest lasting tropical cyclones worldwide lasting over 35 days so far and about to beat the world record for ACE. It’s ACE is around 83 right now. The record to beat is 85.3.
Damn Freddy looking mean and dumping so much rain over Africa ….at this point Freddy seemingly wants to cause as much misery as scientifically possible while maintaining tropical status. 😔😔 Definitely need this cyclone studied after it dies off
