Cyclone Freddy piling inland over Mozambique - March 12, 2023

Descrição

Cyclone Freddy made landfall near Quelimane on Saturday evening with winds of 175 kilometers per hour (110mph), and a central pressure near 962mb. The storm has continued to move inland at around 2 miles per hour (3kph), delivering a catastrophic surge and torrential rainfall to the region. Further rainfall totals of 26 inches (650mm) is expected, on top of what has already occurred, with wide areas of northern Mozambique, southern Malawi and parts of Zambia receiving flooding rains over the next few days. Model forecasts for Freddy are starting to favour more time inland, resulting in a much weakened storm when it emerges back out over the Mozambique Channel and once again back towards southern Madagascar, as a moderate tropical storm. There remains the possibility that the storm continues further northwestwards and fails to exit the coast later on, thus ending Freddy's record-breaking life as the longest lived tropical cyclone on record. Elsewhere, areas of interest in the South Pacific are also likely to develop near Vanuatu and Samoa, with another highly unusual system west of Peru that has a low chance of developing as it moves southwestwards. I will tell my grandkids and kids about Freddy. It’s record breaking and long living. It should get the nickname: “The storm that never stopped” Like Andrew’s nickname “it only takes one”

This is a historical moment for Freddy to break different records and world records.

This year has already being a weird year with Freddy longevity, equatorial TD in the WPAC, subtropical storm in the NATL, and now rare potential for a storm in the South-east pacific (likely due to the developing El nino).

Update: The end is nigh guys for freddy as only hope of convection is towards the south and no models are showing signs of regeneration which was not the case in previous landfall in mozambique🙂
