Cyclone Freddy bothering Madagascar again - March 5, 2023

Cyclone Freddy came back from the dead yesterday in the Mozambique Channel, and is once again harassing the coast of southwestern Madagascar with winds near 60 miles per hour (95kph) and heavy rainfall, particularly along the extreme coastal region of Atsima-Andrefana. The storm is likely to stall over the next 24-36 hours, before starting to power off towards the northwest and strengthening as it picks up speed. A major hurricane equivalent landfall cannot be ruled out once again for the coast of Mozambique, this time near Quelimane by next weekend, but forecast confidence remains very low both in track and timing. Heavy prolonged rainfall is expected over large parts of Madagascar and Mozambique, with many areas over 200mm expected. On top of the storm's first passage last week, this is likely to exacerbate flooding problems, and flash flooding is expected near the landfall zone where over 400mm of rain could fall in a short period.
