Cyclone Freddy and Gabrielle near Australia - February 9, 2023 Update

04/09/2026 · Force Thirteen

Descrição

Two cyclones are swirling on opposing sides of Australia this morning. Cyclone Freddy, located to the west, peaked yesterday as a Category 2 on the Saffir Simpson Scale with winds near 105mph sustained. The storm has weakened substantially since then, and is now a Category 1 storm affected by windshear to the east. The storm will continue to move westwards, away from land, and may strengthen a little again late this week.
On the eastern side, Cyclone Gabrielle poses a larger threat, primarily to New Zealand after it turns post-tropical next week. The storm is expected to intensify and become a Category 2 hurricane equivalent cyclone, and is already on its way there with winds near 70 miles per hour. Gabrielle will push quickly southeast and pass close to Norfolk Island, and then stall a little and expand sizeably, before turning post-tropical and bombing out as it reaches the North Island of New Zealand next week. Hurricane force winds and rainfall of 250mm is possible around Northland and Auckland, and several other locations.
Elsewhere, a high chance of formation exists for another area of interest to the west of Freddy, which we have been tracking for some time now. The system is expected to peak as a Category 1 hurricane equivalent storm well out at sea, and not affect land.

Latest GFS run drops Gabrielle to 958mb as it makes landfall on the north island, putting it almost on par with the storm of 1868. Just out of curiosity though, what is the all-time lowest pressure record for the main islands of New-Zealand?

There is bad news for the Atlantic basin. Because of an expected El Nino being in full swing by the beginning of the peak of hurricane season, we may see a below-average hurricane season this year. But then, the epac and the cpac is expected to be above average this year, in terms of the number of hurricanes

Hopefully the hurricane make up for this quite calm cyclone season

The Southern Hemisphere was basically sleeping (with the exception of Cheneso) all throughout January, but it has finally awakened and we now have the terrifying trio of Freddy, Gabby, and Dingy to track 🙂
