Cyclone Freddy a major threat once again - March 8, 2023
Descrição
Cyclone Freddy substantially intensified in the last 24 hours as it pulled further away from the coast of Madagascar, and attained major Category 3 hurricane equivalent status, with winds near 115mph (185kph). The storm could intensify a little more before gradual weakening is expected, and an eventual landfall is expected near Quelimane by the weekend. The storm is moving fairly slowly, and could stall on its way towards land, and will continue to move slowly as it moves inland. Forecast confidence remains very low, but indications currently suggest that Freddy will turn around and back over the Mozambique Channel, and move southwards.
With rainfall forecasts still uptrending, up to 32 inches (800mm) of rain is now expected in the area around Freddy's expected landfall, with over 7 million people expected to receive 250mm or greater, causing a potential widespread flooding disaster.
Freddy has currently been active for 30 days, and is 4 days away from breaking the world record for cyclone longevity. Additionally, the storm is expected to take the crown for Accumulated Cyclone Energy later this week.
Elsewhere, areas of interest in the Southwest Indian Ocean, Gulf of Carpentaria, and South Pacific have small chances of development at this time.
