Cyclone Filipo swipes Maputo, South Africa with heavy rain

Cyclone Filipo made landfall in Mozambique earlier in the week, and has exited the coast near the capital, Maputo. Winds of up to 60 miles per hour (95kph) and heavy rainfall is lashing the coastal regions, extending into South Africa and inland to eSwatini. Whilst somewhat unusual for a storm to survive this far south, Filipo is swinging back to the southeast, where warm sea surface temperatures could support restrengthening before it turns extratropical south of Madagascar. Australia is set for a wet and windy end of the week and weekend, with two systems likely to impact the region. Tropical Storm 18S is struggling, but is expected to overcome its issues and strengthen substantially over the weekend before approaching western Australia. Anywhere from Exmouth to Eighty Mile Beach could be implicated with major hurricane force winds possible. Further east, a tropical system will pass over Darwin tomorrow, and could become a tropical storm as it does so. The system will then cross into the Gulf of Carpentaria, where conditions are also favourable for development next week.
