Cyclone Cheneso making landfall in Madagascar - major flooding event expected

Cyclone Cheneso intensified throughout Wednesday, and is now a Category 1 hurricane equivalent with winds near 75mph (120kph), and higher gusts. The storm is set to make landfall in the northern region of Sava fairly imminently, and could persist over the country for several days. Rainfall projections are extremely high in places, with maximums of up to 900mm (36 inches) possible over the next 7 days. Large parts of the entire island could receive over 500mm of rainfall, igniting major flooding concerns. The storm itself could regenerate over the Mozambique channel next week, and affect the coast of Mozambique before moving southwards. Elsewhere, Tropical Storm Irene is passing through Vanuatu and has been blasted by strong wind shear in the last few hours. The storm is expected to start weakening as it dips southwards away from land areas. Other systems could develop in the southern Indian Ocean this weekend into next week, as well as possible systems in the Coral Sea beginning with a 60% chance for an active system headed for New Caledonia.
