Tropical Cyclone Batsirai as it passes the island of Réunion on February 3rd 2022.
Maximum wind speeds of over 260 kilometers per hour were recorded in the Indian Ocean as the cyclone intensified.
After first passing the island of Mauritius, leaving thousands of homes without power, the Cyclone passed 180 kilometers to the North of the island of Réunion.
Roads were flooded as heavy rains hit the island, making travel impossible. Heavy winds caused tidal surges in coastal areas, flooding low lying areas. Sea vessels were warned of the threat of rough seas as winds increased.
Over 800,000 citizens were warned not to leave their homes, as the island was put on red alert due to the impact of the storm. Many homes have been left without electricity as the storm damages power cables.
The Cyclone follows the impact of Tropical Storm Ana, which made over 100,000 people homeless in Madagascar, Mozambique and Malawi at the end of January.
The Cyclone is expected to make landfall in Madagascar in the coming days, with the fears of the Cyclone impacting South Africa growing.
