Crowns, Diamonds, and Kings: How Colonialism Changed African Rulers | SLICE | FULL DOCUMENTARY

Descrição

Before Europe’s colonial expansion reached West Africa, the Ashanti kingdom in Ghana was a powerful and independent empire. Its kings controlled vast trade networks, exchanging gold for firearms, expanding their territory, and even participating in the transatlantic slave trade. This wealth and influence shaped the culture of the region for centuries.

Colonial rule transformed the role of African royalty. Today, Ashanti kings no longer hold political power, yet they remain central to Ghanaian cultural identity, honored and revered as guardians of tradition. Across West Africa, many customs, ceremonies, and symbols of authority were reshaped by colonial influence. Even royal crowns — once unknown in African tradition — became emblems of power during this era, adopted in imitation of European monarchs.

In Sierra Leone, the legacy of colonial trade and exploitation is also deeply felt. Diamonds, once a source of wealth, fueled a brutal civil war that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced millions. Amidst this turbulent history, the survival of cultural heritage — from rituals to symbols of royalty — reveals the resilience of African societies adapting to foreign domination while preserving their identity.

The Ashanti king is still very powerful and influential figure in Ghana politics. He advises the president publicly and leads the country in many international negotiations.

I wonder if an African journalist would be allowed to travel across Europe and have interviews and take pictures of the European kings, chiefs, dukes, lords etc and would be treated as nice as the man taking pictures...just wondering.

It’s true that the Ashantis were involved in selling captives to Europeans during the slave trade, but it’s important to remember they weren’t the only ones. Many coastal states and other African kingdoms also took part in the trade. Still, the larger system was created and driven by European powers, who built the forts, supplied the weapons, and controlled the ships that carried millions of Africans across the Atlantic. So, while some African groups participated, it would be unfair to place all the blame on the Ashantis alone. The transatlantic slave trade was a complex system involving both African and European actors, though the Europeans controlled and profited from it the most.

You should’ve specified that the first king interviewed is king of Manya Krobo, which is not part of the Ashanti kingdom. The narration was quite misleading.
