Climate Changed Extreme Weather in Africa and the Global South: Mostly Ignored and Under-Reported

In the last few months the very warm temperatures in the southern Indian Ocean have let to repeated cyclones wreaking havoc in Madagascar, and mainland Africa (notably Malawi and Mozambique). Even as I filmed this video, ongoing severe storms and flooding have hit the Durban region of South Africa with the worst flooding that they have ever seen. Since these events are in Africa, or more generally in the global South, they are generally not reaching mainstream news and are generally not being studied much in the scientific community. They are simply not on our climate radar. Yet, Africa and other parts of the global South are among the worst places for extreme weather disruption in our climate change turbocharged world. This is occurring in spite of the inhabitants being responsible for the least amount of cumulative fossil fuel emissions over the last century. They did not cause the global climate change crisis, yet they are continuing to suffer the most for it, representing a colossal global failure of climate justice. United Nations climate conference policies and global agreements have created funds known under the umbrella term of “loss and damages” for offsetting some of this injustice, however the wealthiest countries repeatedly fail in their promises to contribute to these funds, and like the United States are even hesitant to call them “loss and damage”, even at the latest Glasgow COP26, since they fear lawsuits over their past cumulative emissions. Thus, Africa and the global South continue to bear the brunt of this weather turmoil while being ignored and underreported and underrepresented by global media and the science community. Did you know that there are no climate models specifically on Africa. Countries that have developed global climate models tweak them to attain highest accuracy in their countries of origin, this Africa only gets coverage as being part of the global system, this accuracy is wanting. Also, climate data in the global South, and Africa specifically, is sparse and short term, at best. We need to change this. The central Philippines which should be in the middle of summer with the hottest and driest conditions just experienced horrific flooding over several islands causing landslides and swollen rivers resulting in dozens of deaths.

Once again you have given us a terrific, horrific look at climate change. Until I watched this I knew nothing of heat waves in Africa! Also, it is tragic to see the U.S.leading the way away from aid for loss and damages. Shame on U.S.
