Chaos in New Zealand Today! Giant Flooding Swept Away Homes, Cars in Northland
New Zealand’s North Island is currently facing one of its most severe meteorological crises in decades. A "one-in-a-hundred-year" weather event, fueled by a potent atmospheric river and the lingering effects of a strengthened La Niña pattern, has submerged vast tracts of land, displaced thousands, and severed critical infrastructure links across the Auckland, Northland, and Coromandel regions. This resulted in "high-intensity burst events" where 60mm of rain fell per hour, overwhelming urban drainage systems and rural river catchments simultaneously. The nation’s largest city has borne the brunt of the devastation. The Auckland Council officially declared a State of Regional Emergency on the evening of January 20. Major motorways, including State Highway 1, were transformed into rivers, trapping hundreds of commuters in their vehicles. Auckland International Airport experienced significant flooding in its international terminal, leading to the cancellation of over 200 flights. Travelers are advised to check the Auckland Airport Flight Status before attempting to travel to the precinct. Meanwhile, The coastal community of Pāpāmoa has been transformed into a disaster zone following a "stationary convective storm" that dumped an unprecedented volume of rain over the Bay of Plenty within a six-hour window. As of Thursday evening, large sectors of Pāpāmoa East remain submerged, with hundreds of residents evacuated and local infrastructure reaching a breaking point. Several significant landslips occurred along the hillsides, with debris flows reaching the fringes of residential areas. Residents in elevated zones have been warned to watch for "cracking ground" and "tilting trees," which are precursors to further slips. Meanwhile, The disaster occurred in the early hours of January 22, 2026, following a period of unprecedented rainfall. MetService New Zealand recorded a staggering 190mm of rain in the Tauranga/Mount Maunganui area within a 12-hour window. The most tragic consequences occurred at the foot of the mountain. A massive debris flow—a mixture of mud, boulders, and uprooted trees—surged through the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park. The slips have dumped significant amounts of sediment into the harbour entrance. The Port of Tauranga has issued a notice to mariners regarding floating debris and navigational hazards in the shipping channel.

What a crock of shit. Some of the shots are not even in NZ Go to 9:19. The barrier says "ROUTE INONDEE" (Route Flooded). We speak English and Te Reo here, not French!

Auckland wasn’t affected as much as what you say- the worst is that a landslide came down on Mt Maunganui camping grounds on a toilet, kitchen block. Nine people are missing believed to be underneath this landslide.

So I remember 360mm of rain per night for two nights and 260 mm the third night in Waihi in 1960s. People just forget. And build on flood plains and hillsides.

I think you're getting this mixed up with cyclone gabriella, Auckland airport was not flooded, in fact, Auckland got away with very little damage

Auckland Airport is not flooded. Auckland got a lot of rain and wind but was never declared an emergency and got off lightly. Some of these videos are not even taken in NZ.
