Briefly severe storm with Microburst - Goulburn, NSW, Australia, 15th January 2023
Descrição
I did not have high hopes for today with low shear. Initial storms were very ordinary. However a southerly wind surge combines with storm outflow moved into a warmer (30C, 86F) environment triggering stronger storms. One of these storms just south of the city of Goulburn became severe with microbusts. The official Bureau site at Goulburn Airport reported a 116kph (71mph) gust. Sadly for storm chasing the storms then moved into a DE-CAPED environment north and east of Goulburn due to storms an hour earlier.

Nice work Michael! You are really documenting these chases well! Hope we can score something tomorrow evening!

116 kph gust is fairly significant for a slow moving storm. I got baited out to Goulburn in an attempt to escape the clutter on the highlands, as I was looking for a view the approaching storm more or less turned into a huge rain area (about 5:30-6pm).

Saw these cells on radar... was quiet impressed by them until they started to dissolve as they moved closer to sydney turning into rain 😂... tomorrow shall put on a good show though finally... been weeks since our last proper storm. Also good video as always 🫡

Was at Bowral at Jellore lookout for this day, I can say I "intercepted" the outer edge of a severe storm that dumped 37 mils on Bowral. On the lookout there was the occasional tiny Hailstone among the heavy downpour. Wednesday looks good for us in western Sydney as well as some good lifted index for next Tuesday

Would have been close to 100 kph at Bungendore too; the strong wind wasn't just with microbursts but was rather widespread (91 km/h at Canberra AP as well). This day was a couple of degrees hotter than forecast and the easterly change was racing the storms. The outflow from the storms to the south combined with the progressing easterly to produce a 5-10 minute burst of gale force SE winds here.

I see you had to battle the 'Conga Line' on the Kings Highway as well. I am on 88.9 FM Braidwood this afternoon and I daresay there might be some storm action to report (18 Jan). Hopefully no hail as the car will be exposed.
