Big chaos in France today, Cyclone Chido with a speed of 226 km/hour destroys Mayotte

The French Indian Ocean island of Mayotte was hit by a cyclone, with wind gusts exceeding 200 km/h in Mayotte this weekend.

Cyclone Chido wreaked havoc in the French Indian Ocean region of Mayotte placing the island on red alert. The alert level was lowered from purple, the highest, to red, but the cyclone was not over. The damage appears to be extensive, state and local emergency services have been fully mobilized. Civil security and fire brigade personnel have been deployed and are at the scene. The meteorological agency Météo France recorded wind speeds of at least 226 kilometers per hour at the Pamandzi airport. However, conditions are expected to improve on Saturday afternoon as the cyclone moves away.

The eye of the cyclone swept over northern Mayotte in the morning, and was located at around 10:45 Paris time. The cyclone moved towards the coast of Mozambique on the African continent, leaving a trail of wind and rain that was still heavy. More than 15,000 homes have no power, "There is no cell phone service and we cannot contact people on the island," said the head of Mayotte's firefighters union. Road traffic was also banned and the island nation's main airport, Dzaoudzi, was closed.
