Rodgers Alfred Nikita Mangena trained in Algeria, fought at Wankie, rebuilt ZPRA after the party split, seconded the joint army ZIPA in Mozambique, and led ZIPRA's high command through the war's hardest years. On 28 June 1978 his Land Rover rolled over a mine the Rhodesian SAS had buried under cow dung. This is his story, from Maranda to Kabanga, told from the record: Dabengwa's own tribute, the SAS account, the New York Times report, and the men who served under him.
